      Frequently Asked Quake Questions

For setting up Quake, WinQuake, GLQuake, Quake World and the Quake Mission Packs check out the Game Setups and Hints page. If you need to setup Quake Add on levels and or Patches not listed there keep these following things in mind.
      1. WinQuake, GLQuake and QuakeWorld are all Windows programs and will need the ADVA3D.CFG config file and do not use the ALAUNCH.EXE Program.

      2. All Windows Programs need to have DirectX 5 installed and your combination setup as Device #1 in Game Controllers.

      3. QUAKE.EXE and VQUAKE.EXE are both DOS Programs and will need to use ALAUNCH.EXE to have Assassin 3D Support.

      4. The DOS Versions of Quake need the alaunch command to work and usually you will just need to edit the command line to get these to work. EX. ALAUNCH QUAKE -GAME KILLER if you need to add other parameters you can just add them to the end of the line. If you are making Windows Shortcuts remember to add the directory to the command line. EX. C:\FPGAMING\ALAUNCH.EXE QUAKE -GAME KILLER

What (files) do I need to take with me when I go to a tournament somewhere else?

When I add the command line "EXEC ADVA3D.CFG" in AUTOEXEC.CFG, Quake does not load the file during startup and I need to load it manually. Is there a solution? This can also happen when renaming adva3d.cfg to autoexec.cfg.

My Character keeps moving when I center my joystick

Help, I cannot adjust the deadzones on the joystick properly. Maybe I'm editing the wrong file or am in the wrong directory

I set 'Qbtns = 1' in my quake.ini, but the Skill Settings are still changing.

Quake works great locally, but my Assassin 3D doesn't work with Mplayer!

      Quake - Alaunch doesn't work with Q95.BAT!

Will the Assassin work with Zerstörer - Testament of the Destroyer

The Assassin 3D will work with Zerstörer, unfortunately it seems that it will not automatically exec the config files. I have tried to have the config files in the ZER and in the ID1 directories with no luck in getting them to execute automatically. The only suggestion I have is to manually execute the adva3d.cfg file from the console in the game after the map loads. This will work for online games as well as local games.

When I type in exec adva3d.cfg the game just locks up, Help !

There was a problem with the supplied ADVA3D.CFG file when it was edited with Notepad. It has been fixed and updated Click Here to get a new copy. Save it to your id1 directory and try again. If you need to edit the adva3d.cfg file try using wordpad or the DOS based EDIT program.

In WinQuake my game character just scrolls to the left (or right). or If your view hits the floor, or the ceiling and refuses to stay looking forward.

The only time we have seen this is when the units need to be calibrated. You are talking about WinQuake (this applies to all Windows Versions of Quake) so that means that you need to calibrate through the Game Controllers in Control Panel. While calibrating make sure you get to the top and bottom of the little windows, especially the A3D U/D & A3D L/R. You can spin it real fast (sometimes too fast can actually skip and not work) but you do need to get to the top and bottom. make sure that after you calibrate go into the test and make sure it seems ok. Then Apply before you click OK to close ame Controllers. Also make sure that you have the current DirectX 5 files installed and Updated.

I set up Quake using alaunch, but Quake still asks me to calibrate the joystick.

This is quite rare and can happen when you run the DOS and Windows versions of Quake. What you will need to do is add the -nojoy parameter to the command line for the DOS Versions.
      i.e.
      alaunch quake -nojoy
You can also just tap escape when you see this message.

I've set up WinQuake and it seems like all I can do is walk, how do I run ?

The Windows versions of quake do not use the qbtns commands like the DOS version. You will want to set up WinQuake with always run turned on (options menu). You may need to execute these commands to turn on fast speeds. From the console... CL_FORWARDSPEED 900, CL_SIDESPEED 900, CL_BACKSPEED 900. the number 900 was given to me by another quake player, the servers will turn you down to their max speed, usually 360-400.

How do I set up Windows versions of Quake if I want to invert the Assassin 3D or invert the direction I move the trackball to look up?

There is a new ADVA3D.CFG file with notes on how to do this. If you would like more information on the advanced Quake controller documentation Click Here for the HTML version which has links to get a MS-Word 7.0 version and the basic Text version.

When playing Quake World I notice that when I fire the Rocket Launcher it will delay before firing, what can I do?

This is usually caused by latency (better known as lag), Check out Quake World Central for help on setting up Quake World to help reduce the latency.

When I click the fire a single rocket button the game says unknown command and states the command, what can I do?

You will need to check your quake config files for the alias rl_dbsg. This alias is included in your assassin.cfg file that should have been copied to your quake\id1 directory, it goes like this... alias rl_dbsg. "impulse 7 ; +attack ; wait ; -attack ; impulse 3"
If you find it in your assassin.cfg you need to bring up the console and type in exec assassin.cfg or you can rename assassin.cfg to autoexec.cfg and it will execute automatically. Or you can add the line "exec assassin.cfg" to your autoexec.cfg file.

I've installed WinQuake and when I move the trackball to either side I just Strafe instead of look.

Easy one there, while in WinQuake tap the Escape key to bring up the main menu. Select Options and you will notice that "Look Strafe" is turned on. It will just need to be turned off.

Help, I just installed Quake World and when I use the hat on my joystick I get a message Unknown Keynum...

You will need to upgrade to the latest version of Quake World. Visit either Quakeworld Central or Quakeworld.net

I set up WinQuake (Quake World) and I see "FPgaming Assassin 3D configured" but the assassin still doesn't work?

WinQuake and Quake World ship with the Joystick disabled, to enable it, bring up the console using the tilde and type in "joystick 1". You will only need to do this one time as it will be saved in your CONFIG.CFG file automatically.
